Out With the Old, In With the New

The New Grab 'n Go Caters to All

Students on the go have very little time to stop and get a bite to eat before their next class, or they opt to pack a sack lunch instead of driving off-campus to a fast food restaurant and losing their perfect parking spaces.

Returning students, faculty and staff may remember the former Food for Thought Caf, centrally located in the heart of the campus, next to the Theatre Arts building. Along with the "Extreme Campus Makeover," the cafeteria is also getting a new look.

On Aug. 15 parent-company Harmony Foods launched the new Grab 'n Go cafeteria, co-partnered by Denise Fisher and Roy McDonald, who have been in the food business for 25-30 years. Grab 'n Go will host its "Grand Opening" on Sept. 12.

"Many vendors will be on-hand contributing prizes," Fisher said. "We will offer convenience and appeal specific to Cypress College students with special meal deals that are cost efficient for students on a small budget." Fisher also said the cafeteria will extend into the next room "where students can enjoy an indoor, sit-down relaxing atmosphere."

Although the "Grand Opening" is scheduled in Sept., more construction will be underway around Dec. "By the time students return from winter break, we hope to be up and running and fully functional," Fisher said. In the meantime, Harmony Foods' convenience store is located on the first floor of the Humanities building, managed by Kent Fisher, husband to Denise, and supervised by Donovan Wallace.

One of the new features students will find at Grab 'n Go and the convenience store is the ability to use their ATM or major credit cards for point of sale transactions. Denise Fisher also says the menu has changed. Grab 'n Go offers students not only the popular burgers, hot dogs, pizza, candy and sodas, but a more diverse menu such as Italian, Asian and Vegetarian dishes.

For the early birds, a breakfast menu is available which will include french toast, pancakes, breakfast burritos, croissant sandwiches, bagels, hash browns, and omelet's to name a few. The Vegetarian menu includes falafel, Boca Burgers, garden burgers, egg rolls, and veggie dogs. A full service beverage bar is available along with cold refreshing smoothies, energy drinks, coffee, and sparkling bottled water. For faster service, the convenience store offers various baked goods such as cookies, muffins, pretzels, cold and hot beverages. At both locations some of the familiar items such as Scantrons, headache, cold and sinus medicine, pens, and composition books will also be available.

More efforts to publicize the new Grab 'n Go and convenience store locations are in the works. Because of all the construction, students tend to shy away from making the trek from one end of the campus to the other, or they simply are not aware that Cypress College has a cafeteria.

"I have only been here for two days and just found out there's a cafeteria," freshman Kyanna Ross said. "I plan to buy candy and sodas from there." First-year students David Rodriguez and Stephanie Guzman said, "If we knew where the cafeteria was we would go there."

Steve Savage, a five-year former Food for Thought Caf cook, made the transition to Harmony Foods' Grab 'n Go and despite the ongoing construction, he feels "the foot traffic is about the same."

Grab 'n Go Cafe is located at Cypress College at 9200 Valley View St. in Cypress. For store hours and more information call 714-484-7000.
